Kristin Harila has decided to stop her attempt to trek solo to the South Pole. The Norwegian Sámi mountaineer sustained a back injury early in the expedition and has been experiencing increasingly severe pain.

The primary reasons for accidents in the mountains are unpreparedness and the tendency for people to continue despite adverse conditions. Harila’s mission is to put an end to individuals risking their lives—and the lives of others—in the mountains.

Kristin Harila set, together with Tenjen Lama Sherpa, in July 2023, the world record in climbing all fourteen 8000 meter high mountains in only 92 days. Why? To prove to the world that a good team can do anything, no matter the gender or origin.

Broad Peak, Pakistan – July 23rd, approx. 04:30AM – Mountaineer Kristin Harila and Tenjin (Lama Sherpa) achieved yet another remarkable feat by summiting Broad Peak, the 12th highest mountain in the world and one of the 8000m mountains.

After her successful summit of Cho Oyu on May 3rd 2023, Kristin Harila has set the new “True Summit Speed Record with Oxygen” by climbing all 14 mountains above 8000 in only 1 year and 5 days. In addition, she is the first Norwegian to have ever been on top of these 14 peaks, and also the first Scandinavian.
