Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world and is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19 km (12 mi) southeast of Mount Everest, in Nepal. One of the eight-thousanders, Makalu is an isolated peak in the shape of a four-sided pyramid.
Kristin Harila has decided to stop her attempt to trek solo to the South Pole. The Norwegian Sámi mountaineer sustained a back injury early in the expedition and has been experiencing increasingly severe pain.
